U1 | La bicicleta a l'espai públic: convivència!

L'espai públic és de tots els ciutadans. Aquesta afirmació, aparentment òbvia, deixa de ser-ho quan pensem, en termes de mobilitat, quins mitjans de transport tenen més presència a la majoria de pobles i ciutats: els vehicles privats a motor.

Encara que el percentatge de població que es desplaça habitualment en cotxe o motocicleta és relativament baix en comparació amb el que es mou a peu, amb bicicleta o en transport públic, aquests mitjans ocupen els carrers d’una manera desproporcionada. Això és degut, entre d’altres causes, perquè les vies públiques s'han anat convertint en llocs per on circulen vehicles a motor, pràcticament de manera ininterrompuda, fet que dificulta en moltes ocasions la comunicació humana.

L'espai públic deixa de ser, per tant, un lloc de trobada i convivència per passar a ser un paisatge de trànsit. En aquest mitjà urbà caracteritzat per l'omnipresència del motor de combustió, la bicicleta sorgeix com un mitjà de transport silenciós que contribueix a crear un paisatge urbà més saludable i una mobilitat més sostenible i segura.

Els desplaçaments amb bicicleta per ciutat són adequats per a distàncies iguals o inferiors a uns 8 km, si bé depèn de les característiques topogràfiques dels carrers. En aquests casos, la bicicleta pot substituir perfectament al cotxe o la moto, amb el gran avantatge afegit que no contribueix a crear retencions ni les pateix.
